Principal's Newsletter April 2019.

Dear Parents,

I hope that all of you were able to take some time to enjoy our Spring Break.  The days will go very quickly from here on to the end of school, and they are filled with lots of learning and fun.

As I write this, the weather is warm and the skies are blue – I can only hope that is an indication of what is to come!

Next week, we will begin NJSLA (New Jersey State Learning Assessment) testing, starting with fifth grade.  Fourth grade will follow during the week of May 6th, and third grade after that during the week of May 13th.  The assessment will last for five days for each grade – 3 days of Language Arts and 2 days of Math.  The sessions have been shortened a bit this year, and testing should be completed on most days by 10:30.

We believe that our students have been well prepared for the assessments and that they feel confident about their ability to demonstrate all that they have learned.  We have tried our best to keep testing “low key,” while encouraging students to do their very best and to “show what they know.”  I hope that you will join us in doing the same.  Most importantly, students should get a good night’s sleep, have breakfast every morning, and arrive at school on time.  While this is always important for our students, it is particularly important when they are faced with days of testing.  We have all experienced standardized testing throughout our years in school, and NJSLA is different only in that it seems to last more days than we may remember.  I know that our students will be successful in effectively meeting the challenge.

I am sure that by now some of you know that we have added two new members to our Brayton family.  Cade Fullmer (son of Lauren and Dave) was born several weeks ago, and Caroline Nelson (daughter of Meghan and Mike) just arrived on April 23rd.  Both babies are beautiful and healthy, and we look forward to meeting them in person!  And both moms are doing just fine.

Please remember Teacher Appreciation Week is during the week of May 6th.  That is a great time to take a moment to thank a teacher for the hard work and dedication they demonstrate every day.  We are so fortunate to have such an amazing group of professional and intelligent people on our staff — people who truly care about our children.

Finally, I found some very helpful tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics regarding children’s use of technology.  I hope that you will take a few moments to read them HERE.  As technology becomes a bigger and bigger part of our everyday existence, it is important that we, as the adults, teach and guide our children in the safest and most effective use of it, whether for work or enjoyment.

Happy Spring! Let’s hope for more of this beautiful weather in the days ahead!

Best regards,

Cheryl
