Elementary Band and Orchestra Letter

Dear 4th & 5th Grade Parents,

As the 2020-2021 school year gets underway, and students begin returning to classes in a multitude of new ways, the elementary instrumental music staff wish to inform you of some of our plans regarding instrumental lessons this school year. We want to assure you that our staff are keenly aware of the challenges the novel coronavirus poses to various forms of instrumental instruction and will be approaching this year with health and safety as our top priority. Additionally, it is our goal to continue to provide students with a high-quality instrumental music education. Now more than ever it seems that the creative, social, and emotional benefits of music instruction are a necessity to students’ well-being and well-rounded education. For the beginning of this year, all instruction will be taking place digitally. Students will be participating by utilizing a variety of digital resources that will be communicated through school and grade specific Google Classrooms. Please encourage students to “join” these classrooms, and please communicate with us if there are any questions or concerns.

School subsidized instrument rentals will be available to families who have kept possession of instruments since last year (most 5th Graders), and families for whom private instrument rental would cause an undue financial burden. Since instruments were not collected from students at the end of last year, the supply of school-owned instruments is extremely limited! Additionally, the quality of the remaining instruments is notably lower than what would be available in a “normal” school year. For these reasons, families who do not already have an instrument (most 4th Graders) are asked to secure an instrument rental from an outside vendor, some local vendors include: Elefante Music in New Providence, Music and Arts in Millburn, and Liss Pharmacy in Summit, among many others. If the cost of private rental would result in your child’s inability to participate in our programs, please let us know and we will do all we can to provide you with a school instrument. Rental is strongly encouraged at the elementary level to defray maintenance and repair costs, and to ensure students have a quality, properly sized instrument. Once instruments are secured for students, specific supplies needed for Band or Orchestra will be communicated to you. Please let us know if you need any assistance finding a local vendor, or if you have any questions or concerns regarding additional supplies.

Below you will find a link to our Digital Enrollment & Instrument Rental Agreement, ALL FAMILIES  regardless of participation or rental status should fill out this form to communicate with us your intentions regarding your child’s instrumental music needs this school year. While we don’t yet know how our instruction will be integrated into the school day, it is our hope that through your continued support, and our hard work and dedication to students, that our programs can continue to thrive and provide a creative outlet during this unique and challenging time. We very much look forward to working with your young musicians!
